From early December to mid-January, this Colombian city is ablaze for this festival of lights, which translates appropriately as the “illuminations.” There are competitions among neighborhoods to see who can outsparkle whom, and the city goes all-out with decorations, which even float in the river. Medellin becomes a monthlong fiesta, with daily celebrations, music and food booths to get revelers in the holiday spirit.
